Rebecca will be leading an egg dying workshop at the Second Story Women's Centre as part of her Element Series.

This time, the discussion will be about Earth and we will be dying eggs in the Ukranian pysanky style, using beeswax, kishkas and a variety of coloured dyes.

She will guide discussion as well as provide technical instruction. Materials and supplies provided. A packed lunch is recommended; snacks and tea will be available.

We met many talented crafts people from all over Canada as well as gallery and store owners looking for products to sell at their boutiques. Thanks to the province of Newfoundland for hosting a great schmooze at the Elephant and Castle so we could chat with other students from craft schools showcased at the Trade Show.

Work is well underway with my major quilt project. I finished the fish, which will be hand appliqued on the top of the quilt, and the ladies the the zion church quilting bee have begun hand quilting on the back.

I had a wonderful time getting to know more ladies of Lunenburg at my recent workshop at the Second Story Women's Centre. We talked about our personal relationships with water- memories, dreams, associations and why we live near water. I gave some technical instruction to encourage creativity and we painted all afternoon while the snow piled up outside.

CERAMICS WORKSHOP #1

What a great time I had with Anke, Julia, Allen, Michelle and Sarah.
We all like to get down and get muddy.
Worked hard and overtime, about 15 pieces came to life in the end.
Some wonderful platters made with clay slabs and cardboard moulds by Michelle,
Sarah had a great natural sense of building skills which allowed her to build her complicated Bauhaus style vase without much of my help.
Inspired by vases during Arts and Crafts Movement in North America, Julia never gave up on the wheel to create her perfect shape, which has been decorated with a beatiful pine cone motif. While Julia struggled away on the wheel, Anke was also struggling with her overflowing ideas. A local glass artist from the Peer gallery, Anke brought in a bin full of found objects to create interesting textures on the surface of clay and made several pieces that would also be involved in her glass forming process.
Allen, the gentleman of the workshop, came with a purpose: to make a pawn!
His past time story of his serendipidous relationship with clay through his mother's pottery class was a heart warming story. His cherished hand-made chess pieces were his motivation to be working in different models and moulds.
We will be glazing our pieces on our next workshop date, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

Hello Everyone!

We have been rather negligent with our blog so far. From then on hopefully we can remember to take the time to update you on all the wonderful things we have been up to.

Settling here was easy and fun. The apartment is cozy and charming, especially with all of Rebecca's quirky and sweet decorative fancies. We have a huge kitchen in which we love to cook and bake. Sharing meals helped us getting to know each other and still brings us together to discuss and share some laughs. Quickly, we made the studios our own havens of creation, and it is now part of our everyday and night hang-out spot. When the weather was still warm and sunny, we had our bay doors open and met lots of kind souls, often accompanied with their dogs. We had to get dog treats!

In September, we had our first Open-Studio event, where we invited the town to come enjoy some wine and home-made snacks meet us and see our work. It was very successful, and lots of fun. We have many supporters who encourage us and our practice, and even have us over for delicious dinners form time to time. We certainly haven't been lonely or bored so far. There is always something to plan, see or do. Last Saturday, we all went to see the Youth Orchestra at the St-John's Anglican Church, thanks to Senator Wilfred Moore who offered us tickets. This week and the next, we are having different classes from the Lunenburg Academy to visit our studios. We are also planning our workshops with them, as well as a series we will be offering to Centre Consolidated High School. George is preparing his upcoming community workshop here at the studio. Rebecca attends a quilting group and is active amongst the Second Story Woman's Centre. Amelie begins a weekly private workshop in response to a keen woman's interest in painting. All of us are also spending as much time as possible in our studios working on a body of work that will be displayed in the Port Campus in February.

Well as they say “all good things must come to an end” and here we are at the end of a wonderful and productive year here in Lunenburg. Its hard to believe that its already been a year since we set up shop in the fire hall and it is some what reluctantly that we pass on the torch to the 2010 – 2011 artists: George, Rebecca and Amelie. Of course we know that they are going to have an amazing time here and look forward to seeing how they grown and develop in their own work in this rich and vibrant environment.

Katherine and Kat are pleased to have the opportunity to present some of their work from the Lunenburg Residency at an upcoming show Ninety-Three Years & Ninety-Six Point Seven Kilometers at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, running from September 28th to October 9th, with an opening reception on Monday, September 27th at 5:30 pm.
If you didn't have a chance to visit the final show in Lunenburg please come out and see what kept us busy during our year in Lunenburg.

Kat put together a home décor collection of screen-printed textiles inspired by Lunenburg County, as well as a new collection of paintings.

Katherine spent the year working a little out of her comfort zone – and devoted her time to creating a line of prototypes that she hopes to be able to put into production for sale in the near future. These items are all functional and driven by a desire to create special ceremonial vessels for use in the home – to present a special cake or arrangement of flowers.

So please join us in Halifax for our upcoming show if you can and thanks once again for your continued support.

Upcoming Exhibition: Forty-Five Rounds, Ninety-Three Years & Ninety-Six Point Seven Kilometers

Kat Frick Miller, Jennifer Green and Katherine Thomas are concluding their year as artists-in-residence at the NSCAD-Lunenburg Community Studios. They are presenting their final weeklong studio exhibition, “Forty-Five Rounds, Ninety-Three Years and Ninety-Six Point Seven Kilometers” from August 14 - 19, 2010. The artists invite the public to join them for the opening reception on Friday August 13, at 5 pm. The NSCAD-Lunenburg Community Studios are located at 40 Duke Street, in downtown Lunenburg. The studios will be open from 11 am to 4 pm daily.

Throughout the year the residents have developed independent bodies of work in painting, textiles and ceramics. Kat Frick Miller has produced a collection of South Shore inspired screen-printed textiles and new painted work. Jennifer Green has dedicated her year to flax spinning and will be exhibiting the resulting handspun yarn and woven textiles. Katherine Thomas has devoted her studio time to investigating new techniques and forms in porcelain and will be displaying a collection of objects designed for the luxurious presentation of food and flowers.

To hear more about the work on exhibit, the artists welcome you to attend their public lecture on Thursday August 19 in the Lunenburg Academy Auditorium at 7 pm. The exhibition and presentation are free and everyone is welcome.

Installation at the Port Loggia Gallery

In February we were granted a show at the Port Loggia Gallery in NSCAD University's Port Campus. Our intention was to raise awareness about the Residency Program within the University. While it was a lot of work, as shows always are, we can now reflect happily on the Port Loggia installation.

We divided the gallery into three sections giving each of us a chance to highlight our individual work within the space. The birch walls and high ceilings provided a unique backdrop for the work.

Lunenburg Chowder Club Presentation

In early April we gave a presentation to the Lunenburg Chowder Club at the St. Johns Anglican Church Hall, bringing awareness of the residency program to another branch of the Lunenburg Community.

The presentation was introduced by town Mayor Mawhinney and Senator Wilfred Moore who both spoke about how the program was initiated.

Sharon Blanchard represented NSCAD University's School Of Extended Studies and gave an overview of the specifics of the program.

And for some final food for thought (even though they had already had a bowl of chowder) we spoke about our time here thus far and our plans for the rest of our year in Lunenburg.

Together with the Friends of the NSCAD-Lunenburg Community Studio Residency Program we arranged a small showcase highlighting our own work, as well as that done by previous residents.

Thank you to everyone who came out for a great lunch and to hear our talk - we really appreciate all the interest that the community here has in the residency.

Linen Weaving Workshop at the Kedge Weavers Guild

On the morning of February 15, 2010 Linda Maxwell and I loaded up her silver sedan with a table loom, weaving tools, and show-and-tell items for the linen weaving workshop at the Kedge Weavers Guild.

Crossing the LaHave river to Darlene's house, the group assembled around the fire, a warm welcome from the snow and grey skies outside. Asking the women about their experience weaving linen I listened to numerous stories of linen weaving projects gone wrong. In response I discussed the properties of linen, the structure of the fibre, and linen weaving tips.

Inspired by Mrs. Hill’s last weaving, a Bronson lace design, the loom was warped with a fine white linen in a simple patterned weave. The loom is currently making its way to the weaving studios of various guild members so that each member may weave a short table runner. If you would like to view the work of these talented and enthusiastic weavers, watch for a show and sale hosted by the Kedge Weavers Guild this summer.

Cultural Activities Program Grant Gets Approved!

The Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture, and Heritage has recently approved a Cultural Activities Program Grant which will assist the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in holding a flax spinning workshop at the museum in the spring, 2010. The workshop will consist of the Ice House Spinners, a group of dedicated spinners who volunteer weekly at the museum, as well as other interested museum interpreters. Jennifer Green, current artist-in-residence at the NSCAD Lunenburg Studios, will lead the workshop. Jennifer feels that by adding flax spinning to the repertoire of the Ice House Spinners, the public will come away with a more complete look at the textile traditions of the Maritimes and the work of women in rural fishing villages.

Field Trip to the Fire-Hall (Part II)

Over the past two weeks we have welcomed grade Primary to grade 5 classes from the Lunenburg Academy into our studios to offer them a unique look at what happens in an artist's studio. Through hands-on demonstrations, we introduced them to our working methods and talked to them about what it means to be an artist. The Fire-Hall became alive with their thoughtful questions and meaningful responses. We look forward to working with them again soon when we lead art workshops for them at the Academy.

Port Loggia Gallery Exhibition

Well the winter has hit Lunenburg and we have been busily working in our studios, creating new work and reminiscing about the old. Halifax Crafters Winter Market

After days upon days of sleepless nights of frantic crafting, we finally made it to the Halifax Crafters winter market. It was the biggest show yet for the crafters' and our most successful show to boot!

It was Katherine's first time out and she had a wonderful array of new work all produced this fall in the studios.

This was Kat's fifth show with Halifax Crafters. As a seasoned vet of the crafters community, Kat was invited to design and help print the posters for the show. This design was one of a few new debuts for Kat. While in the studios she also developed a new line of screen-printed textile objects.

Is that a gingerbread replica of the fire-hall you ask? Why yes it is! Just a fun festive way to kick off our second open house, with Christmas just around the corner we thought a welcoming event with hot apple cider and hot chocolate would be perfect on November 28th, the day of the Lunenburg Santa Claus parade.

We were up til all hours of the morning preparing the tasty treats.

We had plenty of people coming though the space, enjoying the unseasonable warm weather and the freshly baked treats. We really enjoyed the support that we got from the whole community and it was wonderful to see so many new people out to see what we are up to.

A big thank you to all that came out and shared in this fun event with us. We will be sure to keep everyone posted on all of our up coming events.

We're busy as bees at the Fire-hall getting ready for a slew of events coming up in the next few days.

Tomorrow evening at 7 pm we will be hosting the second lecture in the Lunenburg Lecture Series featuring artist Mathew Reichertz, at the Lunenburg Academy Auditorium.

Saturday we are hosting an Open House from 11 - 4 pm. Stop by and check out some of our in-studio demonstrations on spinning, weaving, wheel throwing and screen-printing. Just for this fun day we're making a gingerbread replica of the Fire-hall. Fingers crossed that the cookie doesn't crumble before Saturday!

Local Artist Joan Bruneau Receives Prestigious Award.

A wonderful local potter and NSCAD faculty member Joan Bruneau was recently named the 2009 recipient of the Established Artist Recognition Award from the Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Alliance. The award, valued at $5000.oo, was announced at the annual Creative Nova Scotia Gala, held in Yarmouth on October 24.

Joan has spent the past fifteen years developing an international and national career. She is an inspiring teacher an innovative studio potter and an influential mentor. Her studio and gallery in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia have flourished for the past fifteen years.

We here at the fire-hall wish Joan all the best over the coming years and offer her a much hearty congratulations for this well deserved honor.

Jennie Spinning Flax

At the beginning of October, I met a wonderful group of hand-spinners who volunteer at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in downtown Lunenburg. I joined them every Wednesday and shared their company as we spun for an audience of museum goers. On one occasion, a man named Earl was visiting the museum to see our flax spinning demonstration. As he watched me spin, he recounted his experience growing flax in 1937 for a school project. He had such sincere appreciation for these traditional skills and was pleased they were still being practiced in his hometown that it left quite an impression on me.

Flax spinning demonstrations will continue at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in May 2010.

On Tuesday October 27, Susan Hudson led a public discussion on "Art and the Community" at the Lunenburg library. The three of us were invited to participate and share our experiences as recent graduates of a Fine Art university who are currently involved in community outreach programming.

It was certainly inspiring to hear the general support for community arts initiatives. While there was also discussion about the need for increased financial support from all the levels of government we feel privileged that the NSCAD Lunenburg Residency Program has received such generous funding at the Municipal level and that this doesn't go unnoticed by the community. As our time here continues, we are becoming more aware of the strength of the arts community which has taken root here and hope that Lunenburg can continue to gain recognition as a thriving arts centre.

Ghosts of the Old Town Fire-Hall

On All-Hallows-Eve, the most frightening of nights, the ghosts of the old Fire-Hall came back to life. With bone chilling white walls decked with cobwebs and candlelight, the pumpkins were carved to cause quite a fright. The littlest of kiddies we could not entice, as the hollow eyes of the firefighters were too scary a sight. But the older kids did not take heed of our blood-curdling screams and they ran off with our plunder leaving us with nothing but to go back under.

An Introduction - our first open house

Already a month has passed since our September open house so we thought it was about time to post some pictures of our overwhelmingly successful evening.

The evening was entitled An Introduction and was the debut of our new studio set up as well as some art work to the Lunenburg community.

We had a great turnout of both Lunenburgers and NSCAD supporters and had a chance to meet many warm and welcoming individuals. Specifically we'd like to thank Senator Moore for his support for the program and to Sharon Blanchard and Joann Reynolds- Farmer of the NSCAD Extended Studies Department who helped facilitate the event.

While we don't know exactly how many attendees there were we do know that we didn't have a single pickle or smoked mackerel h'orderve left at the end of the evening so we're calling it a success.

Autumn Canning

An exciting part of our September, as we settled into our new home and watched the changing season, was waking up early Thursday morning and going to the Lunenburg Farmer's Market. The abundance of fresh autumn crops and the happiness of the people there convinced us we needed to preserve this moment. So, with visions of a long, lonely winter vanishing from our heads, we began canning. From blueberry and apple plum jam to bread and butter and dill pickles, here is our favourite recipe for a dill that will get you out of any pickle:

Dill Pickles

3 lbs. medium cucumbers

fresh dill

garlic cloves

2 cups vinegar

1.5 qts. water

1 tbsp sugar

1/4 cup +2 tbsp. salt

celery seed

mustard seed

1. Slice cucumbers and sprinkle with 2 tbsp. of salt. Leave for 30 minutes then pack into quart jars. Place a fresh dill sprig and one garlic clove in each jar.

2. Combine vinegar, water, sugar, salt, and boil with two heads of dill for five minutes.

3. Pour syrup over pickles in jars. Seal jars and boil in a water bath for 10 minutes.
